The European Parliament Passes Resolution Supporting a Ban on Killer Robots

Updated: Feb 6, 2019

By Nancy Nemes - Founder Ms. AI

On September 12, 2018, the European Parliament passed a resolution supporting an international ban on the development and use of "killer robots" (Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems LAWS) - which can kill without needing a human to pull the trigger. The resolution was adopted with 82% of the members voting in favor of it.

The issue will be discussed in the UN in November.

Among other things, the resolution calls on its Member States and the European Council “to develop and adopt, as a matter of urgency … a common position on lethal autonomous weapon systems that ensures meaningful human control over the critical functions of weapon systems, including during deployment.”

  • Humans should always be accountable for life or death decisions

  • Autonomous weapons raise fundamental question of human control

  • International ban is needed
